Salisbury, NC – Gladys Hawks King, formerly of Winston-Salem, and Trinity Oaks Retirement Community in Salisbury, NC, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Genesis Healthcare in Salisbury. She was born January 29, 1913 in Mt. Airy, NC to John Burlie Hawks and Phebe Coleman Hawks. Mrs. King attended Blue Ridge Academy and was a graduate of Mountain Park Institute and Junior College where she was elected Best-All-Around, Best Looking and Home Coming Queen. She completed her nursing degree at City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Winston-Salem and afterwards worked as a private duty nurse until she began her family. Later in life she returned to her career as a medical nurse in the Department of Clinics at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Mrs. King was very active in Home Moravian Church and organizations including the Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Cancer Fund, and Old Salem Garden Club. She especially enjoyed flower arranging competitions and canasta. She loved all animal life and was an avid supporter of animal rescue and adoption. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Monroe King. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) King Sowers; son-in-law, Charles Lewis Sowers of Salisbury; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Blair Sowers of Alexandria, VA; two sisters, Louise Hawks Taylor and Betty Ann Hawks Ausburne of Mt. Airy; and a brother, Charles L. Hawks of Kodak, TN. The family will receive friends at Salem Funeral Home on Main Street in Winston-Salem at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2010, followed by a graveside service at God’s Acre, the Moravian Graveyard, in Old Salem at 4:00 p.m. The family asks that memorials may be made to Pawfect Match Rescue, P.O.
