Etta Lea Stokes, 90, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away February 19, 2010 at the Salemtowne Health Care Center. The daughter of Claude Johnson Lea and Alice Belle Violette Lea, she was born June 27, 1919 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. She is survived by her husband Henry Brown Stokes of Winston-Salem and her son, Stewart L. Stokes and wife Tracy A. Hildebrand and their daughter Emily Laurel of Asheville, NC; her daughter, Julia Stokes Warren and husband Jack S. Warren of Greenville, NC and their sons Jack Shelton Warren III and Henry Stokes Warren; and, her daughter Barbara B. Stokes of Winston-Salem, NC. Mrs. Stokes is remembered as a dedicated mother, partner in her husband’s ministry and an active community member. She attended the University of Louisville for two years. In the years following she was a devoted and skilled homemaker. Her family fondly recalls her wonderful meals, homemade clothing, tasteful decorating, delicious picnics and a playful spirit. With enthusiasm Mrs. Stokes was engaged in the life of her church community as Sunday School teacher, youth group and WMU leader, and contributor to other special projects as she faithfully assisted the ministry of her husband. She served a term as the Secretary of the NC Baptist State Convention. Mrs. Stokes has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem since 1990. Mrs. Stokes served her community as the President of the PTA in Tryon, NC and was an active member of the Tryon Garden Club. She served many years on the Board of Trustees of Chowan University. A Celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m., Monday, February 22, at the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem with Dr. David Hughes officiating. The family will receive guests at the church following the service. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at Salem Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Kate B.
