WINSTON-SALEM – Mrs. Velma Mae Soyars Ansell, 84, died October 19, 2009 at her residence in Arbor Acres. She was born December 31, 1924, in San Benito, TX the daughter of the late James Gregory Soyars and Sarah Lizzie Elrod Soyars. She was preceded in death by her sisters Dorothy Woodson and Lillie Stuart of Harlingen, TX and two brothers, Jessie Soyars of Galveston, TX and Ray Soyars of New Philadelphia, OH. In 1943, she moved to Cary, NC, where she was a homemaker, an active member of First Baptist Church, and a Girl Scout leader. Later she returned to San Benito, where she was president of Acme Ornamental Iron, Inc. She is survived by her husband Willie T. Ansell of Winston-Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, E. Sandra (Michael) Lawless of Winston-Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter (Anne) Johnson of Lexington, KY, step-daughter and son-in-law, Jean (Allan) Rabil of Gaithersburg, MD, and step-son and daughter-in-law Kenneth (Georgia) Ansell of Greenville, SC. She also is survived by granddaughters Melanie (Matt) York and Stephanie (Clay) Setzer both of Winston-Salem; Heather (Sean) Collopy of Milwaukee, WI, Bronwyn Jones of Harrogate, TN, and Courtney Hyde of Speedwell, TN; one grandson Trey Johnson of Milwaukee; step-grandchildren Michael, Paul and Rebecca Rabil of Gaithersburg, MD; four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Graveside Services will be conducted Wednesday, October 21, at 4 PM. at Forsyth Memorial Park Chapel in Winston-Salem with the Rev. Robert T. Nations of Centenary United Methodist Church officiating. Salem Funeral Home is in charge of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation, 311 Harvey Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express special appreciation to the staffs of Arbor Acres Fitzgerald Health Center and of Hospice & Palliative Care Center for their compassionate care.
