Martha McRae Alsup died peacefully on November 20, 2008 at Salemtowne Moravian Retirement Community, the home she shared with her husband since 2003. Mrs. Alsup was born October 17, 1916 in Charlotte to Mattie Ham McRae and John Albert McRae, both attorneys in Charlotte. She graduated from the Women's College of U.N.C. at Greensboro in 1937, where she earned a B. S. in Business and continued to be active in the UNC-G Alumni Assoc. all of her life, becoming a member of the Harriett Elliott Society. Mrs. Alsup worked as Secretary to the Supt. of Schools at Gastonia, N.C. from 1937 to 1941. Afterward, she worked in various secretarial capacities at the Air Base in Charlotte until August 1944 when she married Captain William B. Alsup, Jr. in Colorado Springs, Col. After the war, the couple moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., where they have raised their family and lived since 1946. Mrs. Alsup helped Dr. Alsup manage his medical practice for over 3 decades as well as being an active community volunteer. As a Charter Member of Wake Forest Baptist Church, Mrs. Alsup devoted herself to many Family, Student and Outreach programs, including Meals on Wheels. She was involved in her community through the Forsyth County Med. Auxiliary as Sec. and Treas., Winston-Salem Little Theater and Symphony along with Garden and Child Study Clubs and school PTAs. Outside interests she loved include reading, bridge, gardening, walking and traveling with family and friends. Martha Alsup embraced life joyfully with strong faith, an open mind and gracious, loving heart, always seeing and bringing out the best in every child and adult who touched her life. Mrs. Alsup is survived by her husband, Dr. William B. Alsup, Jr. and three children, Willliam B. Alsup III and wife, Sunny Jung Alsup, of Washington, D.C., Robert Martin Alsup, M.D., and wife Jean Enderle Alsup, of Winston-Salem, and Ellen Alsup Worth and husband, Robert P. Worth, of Greensboro. She is also survived by her nine beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kimberly Alsup McGriff and husband, Robert William McGriff, of Charlotte, John McRae Alsup of South Royalton, Vt., Lt.j.g.Benjamin Enderle Alsup, U.S. Navy and fiance', Bridget Webb, of Norfolk, Va., David Alsup Worth and wife Erica Gooden Worth, of Greensboro, Martha Preston Worth and Jonathan McRae Worth, both of Charleston, S.C., Ella Grace McGriff, Robert William McGriff, Jr. and Elsa Anne Worth. Also surviving are nephews Cameron McRae and Douglas McRae and neices Rose Marie McRae and Joni McRae. She was pre-deceased by brothers John, A. McRae, Jr. and wife, Rose, William H. McRae and wife, Frances, and nephew John. A. McRae III. A private Family Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Salemtowne. The family of Martha McRae Alsup wishes to send special thanks to the generous and kind staff and nurses at Salemtowne Community and Health Care for their warm, devoted and professional care and friendship to her and all of her family.
