Dr. Henry Ray Sturkie, 79, died Monday, September 29, 2008 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem. Dr. Sturkie was born in Gadsden, AL on December 11, 1928, the son of the late H. Ray and Thelma Stewart Sturkie. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and received his M.D. from the Medical College of Alabama in 1955. After internship and residency programs at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, Nashville General Hospital, and Vanderbilt University Hospital, he served as an OB-GYN and Captain in the United States Air Force. Dr. Sturkie settled in Winston-Salem in 1964, practicing medicine there for 30 years. A co-founder of Medical Park Hospital and on staff at Forsyth Hospital, he delivered thousands of babies and cared for women throughout the county, while also serving on the clinical faculty for NC Baptist Hospital and Bowman-Gray School of Medicine. Following retirement in 1994, Dr. Sturkie continued his commitment to his community, participating in some part-time clinical care, Meals on Wheels, church activities, neighborhood socials, golfing adventures and enjoying nature at his beloved par course with his bride of 49 years. His three children and seven grandchildren were his greatest joy. The family is deeply thankful for the wonderful care he received at Forsyth Hospital, Salemtowne, and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Dr. Sturkie is survived by his wife, Martha; daughter Claire Billingsley and her husband Andy of Chapel Hill, NC; son Hank Sturkie and his wife Denise of Winston-Salem; daughter Susan Harrison and her husband Randy of Raleigh, NC; and grandchildren Alexander Daly, Andrew Billingsley, Christie Ray Harrison, Michael Harrison, Sarah Harrison, Hunter Sturkie and Stewart Sturkie. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00p.m. Saturday , October 4th, at Salem Funeral Home, 120 South Main Street. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5th, 2008 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or a charity of choice.
