Mercedes Sabio passed away on August 29, 2018 following a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loving family who will all miss her dearly. Mercedes was best known for her work in public television. For nearly 30 years, she was part of the PBS family through her production, programming, and leadership roles at the WGBH, WOUB, WTVI, and NHPTV stations. Mercedes was a creative force and an accomplished producer. Her productions included the Realidades and EMMY-Nominated La Plaza series, Democracy in Education, Take Me to Your Leaders, Go Figure, Chihuly in Charlotte, Golden: The Hobey Baker Story, and Wild New Hampshire. These and others of her works received numerous accolades and recognition for excellence, including EMMY, OBIE, TELLY, and CINE Golden Eagle Awards. After her retirement from media, she gave back to the community through a second career as a medical translator. Mercedes is remembered as a kind, intelligent, and inspiring woman both personally and professionally. Her loss is felt deeply, but her example and legacy continue to provide strength to those who had the privilege of knowing her.

The most intelligent, kind, loving woman I ever met. She was a friend and neighbor that left a positive impression with everyone she met. I will miss her tender voice and always smiling face. Too soon.
Mercedes came to Athens Ohio in 1981 for an MA in Public Broadcasting Management for Minorities and Women. She continued in Athens as Director of Programming for WOUB-TV. She was a talented, hard-working, and respected manager and producer in Ohio and later in New Hampshire and North Carolina public television. I miss her as a student and friend.
Mercedes was a wonderful next door neighbor! We knew that if one of us needed anything, we were there for each other. We were both quite independent, so we did not need much. It was a great feeling to know that Mercedes was close. Her presence is already missed. She was a great friend to me.
Mercedes was a great lady. She was missed when she left WOUB-TV here in Athens, Ohio. This was very sad for me to hear of her passing.

In behalf our our board, staff and me we offer our condolences for the loss of Mercedes. She was a significant lead within the public television industry.
Mercedes was on the staff at WOUB when I was an undergraduate working at the station; I'm very saddened to hear of her passing.
I'm the producer of the In Memoriam segment of the Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Awards. Since WOUB is a part of our chapter, I would like to honor Mercedes in our 2018-2019 video (which will debut at the 2019 regional Emmy ceremony, in August 2019). If one of her family members could send a good high-resolution photo to me at firstname.lastname@example.org I would be happy to include it. Thank you.
To the Family of Mercedes, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the Passing of your loved one. Please find comfort and strength in the scriptures found at John 5:28&29 and Acts 24:15. Jehovah God never lies.
I met Mercedes in High School, she was bright, calm, serious, introvert and a very good friend. A tall distintive person with a great personality. My good friend at the Inmaculate Conception Academy in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. We'll miss you.
May the Loed be with you and the Blessed Virgin accompany you.
