Faith Geretha Sparks Hawkins, 91, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Wilkesboro, died peacefully Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice in Winston-Salem. Faith was born in Forsyth County on February 22, 1927, to William Barney Sparks and Rachel Victoria Joines Sparks. Faith graduated from Wilkesboro High School in 1943, H. F. Long School of Nursing in 1943 and Queen’s College in 1949.
Faith married Dr. Hal Burgess Hawkins on March 10, 1950. Following the birth of their first three children, they moved to Wilkes County, NC, where Hal opened his practice. As an RN, Faith worked as an obstetrical and critical care nurse. Following the birth of their fourth child, Faith served as a hospital auxiliary president, hospice volunteer and as the director of hospital in-service education. She also worked with Hal’s practice, serving as a physician office assistant and office manager. Faith volunteered and served on the boards of many organizations including the American Red Cross, the NC Symphony, Wilkes Art Gallery, and the Wilkes YMCA. An avid gardener, Faith was a member of the Garden Club and the Horticulture Society.
Faith and Hal loved to travel in their Airstream with their children and later in life with their RV. Faith instilled a love of flowers, birds, trees, and all God’s gifts in her children. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro where she was a member of the choir and handbell choir. Following Hal’s death in 2006, Faith moved to Winston and attended College Park Baptist as long as she was able.
Faith is survived by her son Patrick (Susan) of Goldsboro, NC; daughter Victoria Hawkins Walters Lace (Dave) of Simpsonville, SC; son Timothy of Chapel Hill, NC; her sister Bernice Sparks Mathis of Wilkesboro; grandchildren Grayson (Sarah) Hawkins of Catawba, NC, Morgan (Quetzal) Lopez of Maui, HI, Clay Walters of Jacksonville, FL, Hal Walters of Simpsonville SC, Mark Walters of Simpsonville, SC; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a very special niece, Barbara Mathis Dunnigan of King, NC, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Faith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Hal B. Hawkins; son Lt. Hal Burgess Hawkins, Jr., and siblings, Blanch Daniels, Claude Sparks and Doris Cioffi. Faith was loved by many and will be missed by those left behind. She is now reunited with her “Hals” in heaven and no longer in pain.
The family would like to thank the Kate B. Reynolds staff for their kind and special care during Faith’s last weeks. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Dr. Hal B. Hawkins Scholarship Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 458, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know how dear your mother was! She was a member of the Adult 4 Sunday School class at College Park Baptist Church while I was the director in that department. She was such a delight and I loved spending time chatting with her before Sunday School and then before the 11:00 service once I stepped down from that position. I have missed seeing her at church and her sweet smile.
Dear Pat,Viki and Tim. I was so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. She was a good woman, a strong woman. She was my mother's best friend throughout the years. I wish you peace during this difficult time. Your friend, Steve
