Vernon “Ralph” Zimmerman was born May 1, 1932, in High Point, NC to T.R. and Hattie Zimmerman. He and his twin brother were the middle of four children. He accepted Christ as his Saviour when his brother nearly drowned at the age of 16. He was drafted in 1950 and enlisted in the US Navy. He and his brother served during the Korean War on the island of Guam. After his discharge, he enrolled in High Point College, where he earned a degree in Biology, and fell in love with Betty Anne Welch. They were married in 1958, settled in Winston-Salem and had four children. He served as Deputy Service Officer for the NCDVA for 35 years. “Ralph” was active in the Boy Scouts for over 50 years where he perfected his reputation as a jokester. He loved to sing and church was where he shared this passion, praising his Saviour. God called him home on March 8, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, two sons, Keith and Steve (Terri), his daughter, Ashley (Dennis), four grandchildren, Stephanie, David, Anna, and Christopher (Tori), great-grandson, Ray, and innumerable kinfolk including two sisters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Salem Funeral Home Chapel on Main Street. Visitation will be Friday, March 16th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home.

Betty, Keith, Steve. and Ashley,
Our condolences on the passing of Vernon. He was a great neighbor and friend to our family for almost 50 years. He was a great father to your family from his active participation in scouting and the many other activities within the community and neighborhood. He always had time to offer words of encouragement to others. I remember him taking time to show Noah his collection of model airplanes and scouting gear he collected over many years. He has gone to meet up with those who have passed before him and to prepare a greeting for when others join him. His spirit will now be with you always.
Roger, Jennifer, Noah, and Joshua Ogburn

Vernon was a friend & blessing to many who knew him thru Scouting. I meet him in Scouting when he & Myrton Daniels were in the Tanglewood pool during a Cub Scout day camp the summer of 1987. They were supervising Cub Scouts during swim sessions.
He & Miss Betty were inspirations on giving to family and many others thru the years I have known them.
God bless you all.
