Myrtle Eleanor Shouse Burge
Dec 18, 1922 - Mar 06, 2018
Myrtle Eleanor Shouse Burge (Eleanor), 95, died peacefully March 6, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County, North Carolina on December 18, 1922 to Oscar Edward Shouse, Sr. and Myrtle Transou Shouse. She was a graduate of Old Town High School and attended Catawba College. She enjoyed employment at P.F. Hanes Knitting Company, North Forsyth High School, Fairchild Hiller and, for over 20 years, as a nurse recruiter and personnel counselor at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. In the local community, she was a member of and served several terms as President of the Old Town Women’s Club.

Eleanor held a deep love and commitment to her family and to her church. At age twelve she began a piano and an organ ministry at Beck’s which extended from May 20, 1934 until November 15, 2015. Her musical legacy spanned over 81 years. She and her husband, Frank David Burge, had an early involvement in the youth ministry at Beck’s. She also held various positions of leadership as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by her son, Barry Burge (Rhonda) of Winston-Salem; her daughter Betsy Kreeger (Wayne) of Greenville, North Carolina; three grandchildren; Elizabeth B. Traxler (Joshua) of Pineville, Katie B. Davis (Dustin) of Clemmons, and Patrick Kreeger (fiancée Laura Bowers) of New York City, New York; two great-grandchildren, Turner and Elliott Davis; and her beloved nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Frank; her parents, her sister, Dona Maude Sheek; and her brother, O.E. Shouse, Jr.

The service will be conducted at Beck’s Baptist Church at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 with Dr. Karl Minor officiating. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 10:00-11:30 a.m. The burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park.

In addition to her church family and her McDonald’s family and friends, the family would like to give special thanks to a beloved friend and caregiver, Mary Brown; and to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Doctors, Hal Atkinson, Kevin High, Andrew Namen, James Peacock and Nyree Thorne for their many efforts given to increase her comfort and integrity in her later years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Beck’s Baptist Church, 5505 Beck’s Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

Dear Betsy. Barry and family, Your sweet mother was a big part of my life. Her music gave me so much joy! Playing every Sunday and at special events like my wedding and my parents celebration services meant so much to me! She played at all my GA services and when she played "Just as I am" at a revival at the young age of 7, she helped lead the holy spirit to take me down the isle to accept Christ as my Savior. I made a nice display for Eleanor in the church history room located in the church library. I hope you can see it sometime. My love and thoughts will be with you at the service as I cannot be there since I care for my 3 grandchildren during the weekdays. Love and daily prayers.

Dear Barry, Betsy and the rest of your family, Our families have been friends for years. Miss Eleanor played at my wedding and both of my parents' funerals. She has been an icon in our lives and I will never forget her as I will never forget Peter Allan who left us rather suddenly at Christmas. I love all of you and will certainly be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Joan Allan

Heaven has gained a treasure! Those of us on earth have everlasting memories of an amazing individual in Eleanor whose beautiful spirt, wonderful laughter, generous heart and of course musical legacy have made a difference in the lives of so many. I deeply regret that music commitments take me to Washington DC this week. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Betsy, Barry, and families: Please accept my heartfelt condolences on Mrs. Burge's recent passing. It was my great privilege and honor to get to know her and to play a small part in her recent care. She was an incredibly strong and vibrant woman who surmounted many challenges in the later stages of her life journey. I had the greatest admiration for her spirit and will to fight. I am comforted in knowing that she is now resting peacefully and playing the organ in the heavenly orchestra. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Jim
