Elmer Ray Kearney
Dec 05, 1928 - Feb 27, 2017
Elmer Ray Kearney of Pfafftown, NC passed away on February 27, 2017. He was born December 5, 1928 in Forsyth County to Ernest and Nellie Kearney.

He graduated from Old Town School in 1947 with honors as Valedictorian. He went to school for business accounting and started working for Salem Steel. After being called to serve a few years in the U.S. Army, as part of the Korean War, he returned to Salem Steel/Carolina Steel and retired in 1990 with 43 years of service.

He was a life-long dedicated member of Bethania Moravian Church involved in the business/accounting functions of the church and participated in a few Global Missions trips. Having provided 40+ years of dedication to Bethania’s graveyard, he served in every role including Graveyard Committee member, “Superintendent”, grave plot marker, mower, and fence maintainer. He also co-authored a directory titled “Historical Account from 1760 – 2008 of God’s Acre, Bethania Moravian Church Graveyard,” which is requested world-wide for ancestry research.

He spent many years playing a Tuba with the Bethania Church Band, other Moravian church bands, and the Old Town Concert Band.

He was very active in the local political party for several years managing precincts.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 58 years, Bertie W. Kearney.

Surviving are his three daughters, Gayle (Roger) Snyder of Mills River, NC; Beth (Donnie) Riggs of Winston-Salem, NC; Brenda (Eugene) Crotts of Green Cove Springs, FL; son, Carl Gray Kearney of Oak Ridge, NC; and two brothers Clyde (Doris) Kearney of Pfafftown, NC; and Hugh (Norma) Kearney of Pfafftown, NC. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Ashley (Nick) Ward, Taylor Snyder, Kaleb Riggs, Alexanderia Crotts, and Bailey Kearney.

We would like to extend a special thanks to Duke Marley for his weekly visitations with Daddy.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4th at Bethania Moravian Church. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. David Merritt officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethania Moravian Church Graveyard.
