Jacqulynne Clay Pennell passed away peacefully at Salemtowne Retirement Community on February 10, 2017. She was born in Danville, VA on December 27, 1931 to WC and Lottie Hill Clay who preceded her in death, as well as six brothers and sisters.

Surviving are a brother, David Clay of Salisbury, NC; Timothy C. Pennell MD, her husband of sixty-four years, as well as three children: Melanie Pennell Broyhill (Ed), Cliff Pennell (Sarah) and Jennifer Pennell Gortney (Ron). She was blessed with nine grandchildren and one great grandchild: Elizabeth Broyhill Morris (Scott and great grandson Woodson), James Broyhill (Britney), Penn Broyhill (Natalie), Tim Pennell, Clayton Pennell (Ashley), Rhandee Gortney (fiancé Justin), Rylee Gortney, Hannah Gortney and McCourry Gortney.

Jacque was a graduate of Reynolds High School and Virginia Intermont College where she was active in drama, tennis along with many other activities and honors.

She loved children and was involved statewide in teaching and developing preschool programs including the Piedmont Housing Preschool. She served on the boards of North Carolina Baptist Children’s Home, The Rye Foundation and the Children’s Theater.

She was president of the Women’s Guild of Wake Forest School of Medicine and Forsyth Medical Alliance. She was founder of the International Women’s Club at the Medical Center and on numerous committees of the Baptist State Convention.

Knollwood Baptist Church was a place she loved. She was a charter member and served actively on the board of deacons, Sunday school teacher and assisted in starting the preschool program; just a few of her extended involvements.

The family is deeply appreciative of the excellent care she received at the Salemtowne Health Center as well as from her wonderful caregiver Adrian Wardlow.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Friday, February 17th at Knollwood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC at 11:00 am, followed by a reception.

Dr. Tim and Family, Butch and I are saddened by the news of Jacque's passing. May you find peace in knowing Jacque is now at peace, and in God's presence. We will always remember her telling the stories about how you two had dates at the barn at camp, and how she would have to wait if there was a sick horse, or while you finished your barn duties. Keep her memories close! We will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. You are special! Love, Lucinda and Butch Human

Sarah C. Shoaf
Jacque was a unique individual who touched my life in many ways. She was the drama queen in the best sense of the term when she dressed Dr. Pennell's medical school skeleton up in old lady clothes, put it in a rocker beside a cauldron of candy, and spoke off-stage to the petrified trick or treaters at Halloween who double-dog-dared each other to run up and get the candy without the skeleton grabbing them. She was an inspiration for the Women's Auxillary back in its heyday -- she knew how doctors' wives were supposed to give back to the community on many levels. I loved her involvement in the Little Theater, and felt her influence in that for many years. Although we parted ways when we both moved away from the Wiley Avenue/Carolina Avenue neighborhood where I grew up, our whole family grieves with yours in her loss. Know that the Shoafs feel your deep pain and will miss her greatly. Much love to the whole family.
