Douglas Elizabeth “Beth” Austell, 87, daughter of the late Ruth Lancaster Austell and James Cline Austell, Sr., departed this life at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, NC on September 14, 2016.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church on Fifth Street.

She was a native of Blacksburg, SC, being educated in the city schools, and graduated from Gaffney High School, Gaffney, SC. She attended Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC. She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC and Queens College, also in Charlotte, NC.

Miss Austell was a veteran of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps with the rank of Captain. She retired as a member of the nursing staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salisbury, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, James Cline, Jr., Maynard L. “Gabe”, and Raymond M.; a niece, Ann Austell; and a nephew, Larry Austell.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Frances Austell Smith, Winston-Salem, NC. She has one surviving niece, Millicent Austell Flake (Keith), Sugar Valley, GA. Surviving nephews are Todd M. Smith (Jane), Colfax, NC; Stuart R. Smith (Kelley), Greensboro, NC; Scott E. Smith (Debra), Springfield, VA; David L. Austell (Brenda), Clover, SC; Steven L. Austell (Carol), Germantown, TN; Michael C. Austell (Lisa), Matthews, NC; sister-in-law Elizabeth W. Austell, Winston-Salem, NC; fifteen great nieces and nephews; and three great, great nieces.

The Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19 at Milford Hills Baptist in Salisbury, NC. Graveside services will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg, SC at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Fitzgerald Place of Arbor Acres and the Hospice and Palliative Care of Forsyth County.
