Blanche May Shermer Allen
Feb 02, 1931 - Dec 03, 2015
Mrs. Blanche Allen, 84, died Thursday morning, December 3, 2015, after two recent stays at Forsyth Medical Center’s Intermediate Critical Care. She was born February 2, 1931, in Forsyth County, to the late Sallie Jane Spillman and Arthur Lee Shermer.

Mrs. Allen graduated from Reynolds High School and attended Bob Jones University. She was a technical editor at Western Electric Company, where she met Thomas Ray Allen. 2015 saw the 61st year of Blanche and Tom Allen’s marriage. They resided some 50 years at 3426 Pennington Lane, half a block from Sherwood Forest Elementary School, where all four of their children attended.

Mrs. Allen was a member of First Baptist Church on Fifth Street, where earlier she engaged in children’s ministry, often going to Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in the summer to study the latest methods. She had a heart for the development of children, be it music and religious education or language literacy.

Mrs. Allen enjoyed reading, cooking, music-making and being with family and friends, who were blessed by her loving spirit and humor. She was known for her contagious sense of humor. Although she was raised in the “school of hard knocks,” as she might say, she had a sense of optimism and communicated it to those around her.

Mrs. Allen often shared a song, poem, or word-play, whether reciting from enduring memories or commenting anew on the present. A good story was never too far away, given her sense of narrative. She was a skilled musician, equally at home on the piano or finding an alto line while singing with others. Even during late-stage lung disease, she joined in immediately if you started a tune, not waiting for an invitation.

Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters (Harriet Creola and Ruby Elizabeth), a brother (Frederick Ray), a daughter (Elizabeth Mae), a niece (Anita Snyder) and two nephews (Terry Martin, Mark Martin).

Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Tom, her brother Henry Lee (Juanita), and the families of her three sons: Bill and Becky, Dale, and Brian and Elizabeth, parents of granddaughter Lindsey and grandson Charlie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, December 6, at Salem Funeral and Cremations, 2599 Reynolda Road, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be at First Baptist Church on Fifth Street at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 7, with the Rev. Emily Hull McGee leading. Reception immediately after.

The family is deeply grateful for the commitment to care by so many attending staff at The Oaks and Forsyth Medical Center. The family gives heartfelt thanks for the sustaining care extended by the wonderful women in First Baptist Church’s Forerunner Class.

Memorials may be made to the TV Ministry, First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Online condolences may be made to www.salemfh.com.

Thanks be to God for the life of Blanche May Shermer Allen.
