Doris Poindexter Ammons passed away at her home on November 26, 2013, surrounded by her loving husband of 62 years, Lenwood, and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, C.B. (Brooks) and Lucy Speas Poindexter and her brother, Ralph Poindexter.
Doris grew up in Winston-Salem, graduated from Hanes High School and High Point College where she was Miss High Point College in her senior year. She was a teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System for thirty-five years; each year describing her new students as the best ever.
She was a member of First Baptist Church for sixty-two years and a faithful volunteer for the Meals-On-Wheels program for twenty-six years. Avid travelers, Doris and Lenwood visited all fifty states and several countries. She was a dedicated Wake Forest fan enjoying the many games she and Lenwood attended over the past fifty-seven years. Doris brought her creativity, beautiful smile, and sparkling eyes to all she did and to all she met. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her loving husband, Doris is survived by her sisters-in-law, Carolyn Poindexter of East Bend, NC and Mildred Ammons of Richmond, VA as well as eight nieces and nephews: Caroline Taylor (Jerry), Julia Hinnant (Dwight), Sandy Poindexter (Linda), Brad Poindexter, Brooke Balun (Scott), Adair Pickard and Sandra Morrissey (Don) and Charlotte Wright (Bill). She is also survived and loved by grand nieces and nephews: Katie Cummings, Richard Hinnant, Abby Poindexter, Will Balun, Thad Balun, John Pickard, Beth Patterson, Suzanne Morrissey, and Michelle Morrissey.
Lenwood and the family sincerely appreciate the dedicated, loving and compassionate care provided Doris during her final years by her special friend, Billie Davis.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Salem Funeral Home at 120 S. Main St., Winston-Salem with Dr. W. Randall Lolley and Rev. Charles Fishel officiating. Though I only met Doris a few times, she was one of the most welcoming and warm people I've met. I thank the Morrissey family for sharing her with me in this little way and my prayers and condolences are with you all and Lenwood at this difficult time.
