Sep 18, 1952 - Jul 16, 2013
Larry Williams Austell, age 60 of Kernersville, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, after a long illness. He was born on September 18, 1952 in Oxford, Granville County, NC, the eldest son of Elizabeth Williams Austell and the late M. L. “Gabe” Austell.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Austell is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 22 years, Kay Couvillon Austell of the home; three loyal and caring brothers, Steven Lancaster Austell (Carole) of Germantown, TN, David Lynn Austell (Brenda) of Clover, SC and Michael Cline Austell (Lisa) of Matthews, NC; twelve beloved nieces and nephews and one special great-niece.

Mr. Austell was a 1970 graduate of North Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem where he lettered in football and tennis. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University in 1974 and was Social Chairman of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Austell worked as an outside sales representative for many years with Joseph Markovits, Inc. and later with Russell Stover Candies.

Mr. Austell was a member of First Baptist Church on Fifth in Winston-Salem and the Koinonia Sunday School Class. He loved music, travel, boating and water skiing. He was an avid Duke basketball fan and a Civil War buff. He considered his greatest accomplishment to be giving his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He was gentle, loving and kind and loved by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, July 19, 2013, at First Baptist Church on Fifth, 501 West Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Oh lib! Dick just called me to give me the sad news. We are devastated . Larry's strength and courage facing his challenges is an inspiration . I am so sorry he lost the final battle. I am at the beach with David and Bob's kids and can not go to the Friday service but my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am close to Shallotte and would very much like to pay my respects at the grave side service if it not family only. Johanne

I have vey fond memories of Larry and the Austell family. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Larry and want you to know you're all in my thoughts at this difficult time. I'm sure he was surrounded by his family and friends during his long illness which must have meant so much. May you find comfort in the memories of Larry and the life he shared with each of you. Kay, Libby and all, our thoughts and prayers go out to each of you during this difficult time. Although we all grieve for our loss Larry is with his Dad and his Heavenly Father. He is probably saying "don't grieve for me for I am fine and we all will be reunited again." Will see u Saturday and love you all.
