Arbor Acres, Winston-Salem, NC
Winston-Salem - Sara Alspaugh Chamblee of Arbor Acres’ Fitzgerald Center was welcomed into God’s Kingdom on Friday, June 17, 2011. Sara was one of God’s faithful servants giving of herself to others from the time she was a child to being a helpmate to her husband Art. She gave of herself at each church her husband served from Georgia to Forsyth County, the Methodists Children’s Home, on to Surry County and then retiring from Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown.
Sara was born on May 29, 1919 to Carl and Jessie Kimel Alspaugh. May 29 would be an important date for on this day in 1944 she married Arthur L. Chamblee, Jr. She always said he could not forget their anniversary because it was also her birthday and the day they graduated from college.
Sara was the oldest of ten children born to Carl and Jessie Alspaugh. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur L. Chamblee, Jr., parents Carl and Jessie, brothers Carlton and Lee Roy, sisters Rebecca (Beck) Tallerday, Rachel Haskell, Martha Copeland, Miriam Chatmon, and Geraldine ( Beanie) Nifong. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Dale Venable.
She is survived by her children Art (Peggy) Chamblee of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter Jane Leigh (Mitchell) Venable of Ararat, NC.; grandsons Brennan (Laura) Chamblee of Mobile, Ala., Brian (Meg) Chamblee of Homewood, Ala. and a special great granddaughter Sara Margaret Chamblee of Homewood, Ala.; sisters Donna (Richard) Whitley of Winston Salem, Mary Parrish of Norfolk Va., and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday June 19, 2011 from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home on Main Street in Winston Salem. The funeral will be Monday, June 20, 2011 at 11 o’clock, Morris Chapel United Methodist Church on Darrow Road in Walkertown NC, by Rev. Steve Autrey. Burial will follow in church cemetery.

Jane, I was so sorry to hear about your mother. I just got the email from The Children's Home. I know it is a little late to offer my condolences but I have often thought of you and your family. I remember your mother and father so nice to all of us.

Sarah was a very special lady and dear friend of my late mother Evelyn Bartelt. They met at MCUMC before my mother became a member and visited her at the Arbor Acres Community and shortly afterwards decided to make it her new home. They met frequently for meals and according to my mother had a delightful friendship. She always had a warm smile and kind word. I'm so glad that she got to see the video made of my Mom playing the piano at her memorial service. Sarahs' presence was a comfort to me and my family. I will remember always as a dear friend of my mothers(also born in 1919)and someone she always looked forward to conversing with while at eh Arbor Acres Community. We are deeply sorry for your family's loss.
