Henry C. Allen, Jr. of Winston-Salem passed away in his home Saturday evening June 12. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emalyn Jones Allen, in April of this year. They had been married 61 years. Henry started his career working for Hardware Mutual Insurance Co. to support his family while attending Emory University Law School. After graduating, he remained with the company in various management positions which eventually took him to the home office in Stevens Point, WI. In 1964 Henry came to Winston-Salem with his family to accept an executive position with Security Life and Trust (later Integon Corp) retiring in 1987 as president of Integon’s Property and Casualty Co. Henry gave generously of his time volunteering with numerous local charitable organizations. He served as president of the Old Hickory Council for the Boy Scouts, the Urban League of Winston-Salem and the Red Cross of Forsyth County. He also served on the boards of Senior Services and Planned Parenthood among others. Since retiring, Henry and his wife, Em, were committed volunteers for Meals on Wheels. They traveled to Vietnam in support of the Children of Vietnam organization. Other interests included extensive world travel, antiquities, music, tennis and golf. He was an active member of his Sunday School Class at Centenary United Methodist Church for many years as well as a life member of Kiwanis International. Henry lived a full and productive life. He was grateful for all of the opportunities and joys that came his way, especially his wife, children and grandchildren. He and Em maintained many friendships around the world which enriched not only their lives but those of their friends and family. He had an inquisitive mind that took him in many interesting directions and brought fascinating people and experiences his way. He was a strong and loving father and husband and a great role model for others. Henry was well loved and is much missed. Henry was born on August 28, 1922 in Grady, AL and grew up in Montgomery, AL. He served 3 years in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He met and courted Em while attending Auburn University where he graduated in 1948 and Emory in 1950. Henry is survived by his sons George Allen (Nancy) and Jack Allen (Pam), daughters Betsy Miethbauer (Joerg) and Merritt Hazzard (Mark): grandchildren Sarah Gershon (Matt), Susannah Crosier (Miah), Patrick Allen (Seema),Thomas Allen, Sam Allen, William Allen, Griffin Hazzard, Parker Miethbauer, Alston Miethbauer, Julia Hazzard: Great Grandchildren Sam and Xavier Allen. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 3:00 pm at Centenary United Methodist Church.
